M: “Good evening Mr. Thomas I hope you’re feeling better?”

Subject grunts

M: “That’s good. I’m Maria Shapiro and I’m going to be asking you a few questions. Now – can you look up for me please Mr. Thomas? – There’s a good boy. You have such a lovely face too; you shouldn’t hide it away like that! Now I’m going to ask you about the drop you saw last week. Horrible I know, and such a traumatic thing to witness but we need to know what you saw. Drops have been increasing over the last few months. We had one yesterday that caused the deaths of five kids playing near the glowpools. The eldest was seven. Tragic, just tragic. Anyway what I need from-”

Sentence inaudible due to a loud retching sound

M: “Oh for fuck’s sake. (Into personal microphone) Richard… Richard I thought you said he was better today you fucking moron… No… No he isn’t! Because he’s just thrown up all over me that’s how!”

–BEGIN TRANSMISSION–

M: “Today Mr. Thomas I want to get to the bottom of this, is that alright with you?”

T: “Sure.”

M: “Tell me about the drop.”

T: “It happened at the scrap market. I was right outside Fiber’s Optics with my friends and we were talking about… Well I ‘spose there’s no point in lying, we were talking about robbing the place. Fiber always had his scrap right there in the open and we’d been saying for years that we should just take it. Sell it a few sectors across and buy some volt, maybe visit the Red Bot District and have ourselves a real fine-“

M: “Mr. Thomas, please. Let’s concentrate on the drop. What happened to Fiber?”

T: “You know damn well what happened to him. He was smooshed. Like a fucking snail. Old Fiber was a cranky fucker but he was alright, you know? He didn’t deserve to go like that. Anyway there weren’t any recognizable piece of him left down there in the mud, and it wasn’t long ‘til the piss came rolling in so there was even less of him by the time you lot got there.”

M: “Which is exactly why we need your help Mr. Thomas.

T: “I know miss. I’m trying to help you it’s just… It gets fuzzy sometimes… like my brain’s forgetting that day quicker than the ones that came before it. I… can you hear that?”

M: “I can. (Into personal microphone) Richard, are you getting this? Is that something on your end? Richard? Richard-”

M: “Tell me about what exactly it was that crushed Fiber.”

T: “He appeared one day, while everyone was minding their own business. A creature, a thing.”

M: “The object that dropped was sentient? Did it say anything to you, did it try and communicate?”

T: “He said ‘We’re already here.’” He sounded surprised, almost disappointed. Like he had been beaten to the punch.”

M: “Do you have any idea where this creature is now?”

T: “Yes of course. He’s here with me.”

M: “We’re the only ones here Mr. Thomas. It’s just you and me.”

T: “He’s inside. He’s inside me. I didn’t like it at first but… but then he showed me.”

M: “’He’? Who’s ‘he’ Mr. Thomas. Did this happen in one of your dreams, like with the bug? What’s inside you?”

T: “It’s him. The one who dropped. The one who climbed inside. Nith. He comes.”

T: “I had a dream last night that I had a bug stuck in my throat and whenever I tried to say something it would stop me, and only say the things it wanted me to say.”

M: “That sounds more like a nightmare than a dream.”

T: “No. It was wonderful.”

  1. Thanks Amber 🙂 I often find myself writing from the perspective of those with an unusual mindset, or a different way of viewing the world. What seems nightmarish to some could be a dream come true for others.
