Deep beneath the ocean, in a cave where only the bravest, or craziest of divers dare explore, there lie three glowing, misshapen things. Though their form is odd, they are also beautiful and unique. The Winners, in no particular order: Waiting for Nith by Debb Bouch Shadowplay by Kris Cerneka 32nd of Cesuary by Darcy Tranter-Cook Congrats guys. There will be a new award up shortly.

How I wish this were to be a cautionary tale, but by now there may be no one to give caution to. The television speaks static and the radio dials panic and all around bloodcurdling screams echo out from the streets below. Yet, if it were the devil himself singing our end I could rest easy that our end was our retribution. For now, in the last hours, I can only recount a nightmare of when light kissed the dark of the depths, and birthed a fathomless, fetid thing. Listen: We were a meagre trio braving the bayou for science: I, the botanist, Henderson the photographer, Mellick the guide. Sent to the mercy of the mosquitoes for the sake of salinity levels and oxidizing markers. I was already knee-deep in …

Wiping the steam from the mirror my face came into view. I grinned and my reflection showed me my pearly whites. ‘Nith, you are one handsome troll,’ I said to myself. My green skin had a nice tint of brown in it and was as rough as sandpaper. I widened my deep-set yellow eyes and put on my mean face. My incisors extended to the bottom of my wide nose and the wrinkles made me look fierce. Any foe would run scared. I chuckled softly to myself and turned to change into my uniform. Living with my old clan I had never been allowed the luxury of a good long shower. The others had always ganged up and beaten me, leaving me with only cold water. As I zipped up …

I guess it had been there a long time, gaining substance, taking form. But it was only recently that I started to believe there was actually something there, scuttling into the shadows whenever my glance skimmed over the corner. This echoing empty house had too many shadowy corners; most were best not explored too closely. So as I sat at my desk watching the gathering dusk, I gazed deliberately into the corner rather than averting my eyes. I saw it then, its shape darkening and solidifying with every moment. As the room grew darker, so did it; perhaps it was binding the shadows to itself. I looked and I saw it looking back at me. Some eyes blinked, others held their steady gaze and all were lambent and golden in …

It’s been a rough few days. The burning sun above makes the damp air humid and smothering, and hunger has a way of getting at you. Most of the food I have managed to find has been covered in flies and rotten for at least a week, but in its own way these discoveries also serve a useful purpose; rotten food tells me that the …
