Liar’s League

Established in April 2007, Liars’ League is a themed monthly fiction night, where professional actors (from our company of around 100) read new short stories by writers from around the world. Events are held at The Phoenix pub in Cavendish Square, Central London, and readings are filmed in HD for YouTube and podcast for free download: our ever-growing online archive holds over 300 stories and counting.
WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR, IN SHORT:
– New fiction, i.e. unpublished (print/web/audio)
– Stories which are on-theme
– Anonymised (no name on the document)
– Word count: STRICTLY 800-2000

The Short Story Monthly Competition

Monthly Competition with £250 for up to 2000 words short story. Entry is £4.99.

Dark Tales   (New)

Deadline: Last day of every month.

Winner receives £100 and publication in the anth. Short listed entries are published in Dark Tales. Short Stories should be no longer than 5000 words. Entries fees range from £5-20 depending of if you want a critique.

August 2016

The deadline for Tethered by Letters’ 2016 Spring Writing Contests is August 1! This time around, Tethered by Letters is offering $1600 in prizes for our Spring Contest winners.

 

Emily St. John Mandel, author of Station Eleven, will be judging short story submissions; poet, teacher, and activist Suzi Q. Smith is the poetry judge; and Helen Phillips, author of The Beautiful Bureaucrat, will choose the best flash fiction submissions.

 

In addition to a weighty cash prize, winners of the Spring Contest will be considered for publication in F(r)iction, our tri-annual journal of fine art and literature.

Tethered By Letters

Tethered By Letters

Deadline: 16 April 2016

Anything genre, $1000 first prize for a short story between 1000-7000 words. $18 entry fee. Check their website for more details.

March 2016 Deadline

Fabula Press

Deadline: 31 March 

Word count: Minimum 1500, maximum 7000. At the editors’ discretion some latitude may be allowed on both minimum and maximum word counts for stories of exceptional merit. Entry fee: US$10.

Prizes: The contest carries the following prizes:

  1. First Prize:      US$250
  2. Second Prize: US$150
  3. Third Prize:     US$100

January 2016 Deadline

Stringbark Award

Deadline: 31 January 2016

Stringybark Stories is pleased to announce its latest open-themed short story award with over $900 in cash and book prizes, as well as publication, awarded for the best entries. The winning tale will be a story of 1500 words or fewer that entertains the judges. International entries most welcome.

Umoja Writing Comp

Deadline: 6 August 2015
Open to Australian Residents, all proceeds go to the Umoja Orphanage Kenya. 1000 word limit, $25 entry fee, $150 first place, $50 second place. First, second and third receive certificates and publication on the website. Also open to essays and travel writing.

Machigonne Fiction Contest

Deadline: 20 August 2015.
First prize is US $1500 for up to 5000 word short story. $20 Entry fee.

Olga Masters Short Story Contest

Deadline: 20 Aug 2015. Open to Australian Residents only
Prize for first place is $1500 AUD with $500 for second place. Word limit is between 2000-5000 with a $10 entry fee

Mona Brand Short Story Competition

Deadline: 31 Aug 2015.
$200 First Prize, $150 Second Prize, $50 Third Prize for up to 2000 Short Story. $7 Entry Fee

Sydney Writers Room Short Story Competition

Deadline: 31 August 2015.
Open to Australian Residents only the prize is $500 first place and $250 second place for up to 2500 word short story. Entry fee is $12. Winner also receives ‘hot desk’ at the Sydney Writer’s Room for three months.

The Carmel Bird Award

Deadline: 31 August 2015. Open to Australian Residents only.
First place receives $500 for up to 5000 word short story. Entry fee is $15.

Toowoomba Writers Festival Literary Prize

Deadline: 31 August 2015.
$550 Prize Pool and publication across multiple categories. Short Story has a maximum word limit of 2000. $5 per entry.

Positive Words Mini Competition

Deadline: 31 August 2015.
Micro Fiction (100 words) or Poetry (10 lines) contest where for the price of a stamp you could win 6 months subscription to Positive Words mag.

September 2015 Deadline

Manchester Fiction Prize

Deadline is the 25th September 2015.
Up to £10 000 first prize for the best short story up to 2500 words. Entry fee is £17.50.

Fabula Press

Word limit: 2000-7000 words. 2015. $10 entry fee. First prize is $150.

Tethered by Letters

2015 John Marsden and Hachette Australia Prize for Young Writers

Deadline: 7 September 2015. Prizes in both the under 18 and 18-24 category. Australian Residents only.
1. 18-24 First place awarded $3000 and manuscript assessment from Hachette staff. Word limit is 3000 short story or first chapter of a novel. Entry fee is $10.

2. For Under 18 First place prize is $500 for 3000 word short story (no entry fee).
They also do poetry competitions in both age categories.

The Katharine Susannah Prichard Speculative Fiction Award

Deadline: 11 September 2015, Open to Australian Residents only.
A $300 First prize with $150 for second place and $75 for third. Story between 1000 – 2500 words. $10 Entry Fee, $15 for 2 or $20 for three.

Marjorie Barnard Award

Deadline: 25 September 2015, Open to Australian Residents only.
A $500 First Prize for up to $3000 words and an entry fee of $10.

Rolf Boldrewood Literary Awards

Deadline: 25 September 2015.
First prize is $500 and a bust of Rolf (Gotta enter just for that!). Second Place is $250 for a short story or memoir up to 2500 words. $10 Entry fee. They also have a poetry competition.

Katherine Susannah Prichard Short Fiction Awards

Deadline: 25 September 2015, Open to Australian Residents only.
A $300 First prize with $150 for second place and $75 for third. Story between 1000 – 2500 words. $10 Entry Fee, $15 for 2 or $20 for three.

Margot Manchester Memorial Short Story Award

Deadline: 30 September 2015.
First Place Prize of $200. Second place $50 for a 1200-1500 word short story. Natural world theme and $5 entry.

The Caterpillar Short Story Prize

October 2015 Deadline

19th Annual Zoetrope All Story

Deadline: 1st October 2015.
First Prize is $1000 with $500 for Second Place and $250 for Third Place. Word limit is 5000 words. Entry fee is $20. All genres accepted.

Fantastica Short Novel Prize

Deadline: 1 October 2015: Residents of Australia or New Zealand only.
A Short Novel Award. Prize is $500 and publication through Xoum under the Fantastica imprint. Word count 20 000 – 50 000

City of Rockingham Short Fiction Awards

Deadline: 9 October 2015
First Prize is $400, Second Prize is $200, Third Prize $100, 2 x Commendations $50. Short Story should be 1000 – 4000 words. No Entry Fee, but story must be based on an artwork that you can find on the website. There are also Over 50s and Young Writers (10-17) Categories.

Morrison Mentoring Short Story Competition

Deadline: 16 October 2015. Open to Australian Residents Only

  • 1. Open: First Prize is $250 plus publication in anthology. Up to 3 000 words on the theme of ‘Flourish’. Entry fee $5.
