Short List & Winner Announcement
TRIGGER WARNING SHORT STORY CONTEST GUIDELINES
The Samurai and Western Genres both occupy the territory of the revenge narrative, often involving a lone hero or ragtag group of unlikely heroes held together by a broken loner. Themes like loyalty, fealty, honour (in life and death) and justice form part of the larger story in most Westerns and Samurai Fiction, as well as an understanding of the historical context.
Less talked about is the emotional and mental states of the heroes, whose exposure and skill with violence leads them to predictable, evisceratory ends.
What compels the violent hero?
In this contest we ask you to write a story no more that 1200 words long using the similar traditions of the Western and Samurai genres.
WHAT ARE THE CHARACTER REQUIREMENTS?
Highlight the emotional instability of your characters and use it as a driving force for the conflicts and possibly resolutions that occur in your story. You may chose the lone hero or ragtag group of misfits convention.
WHERE SHOULD IT BE SET?
Draw on historical timelines and periods where these genres are most popular. Include a modicum of understanding of the periods and show that you’ve at least bothered to read the Wikipedia page on Feudal Japan before you write about it.
Of course, tactfully executed surprises are always welcome.
WHEN IS THE DUE DATE?
The due date is April 24 for a May 1st Winner Announcement
ARE THERE ANY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS?
Try to capture the flavour of theses genres, as they are closely linked. See Seven Samurai, The Magnificent Seven, and Seven Psychopaths (all films) for more.
