Writing Prompt

Popping down the costume shop for a bit of dress up can be a shocking experience in its own right. What if you don’t want to go as a sexy vampire, sexy zombie or sexy dental hygienist?

In this contest, you’ll need to write a piece of fiction about someone who shirks convention and dresses as something seriously daggy for their Halloween or other dress up party.

But we still what the story to be a flirty one!

Try to capture sexual tension, romance or flirting in your words. Make it the crux of your plot, and explore the unconventional ways the human body and mind can be attractive.

Also include:

  • Something fake being real or vice versa
  • An uninvited guest
  • Song lyrics that help move the story forward (original or otherwise)

Realism, horror, good the supernatural are all open.

Entry Format

A cover image is no longer a prerequisite, but we still love them. All cover images must be in 4:3 format landscape (not portrait). Most photo editing programs give you that option. If you’re using your phone, try the Snapseed app, it has lots of cool features as well. Another recommendation is Pixlr.

If including a cover image, ensure that you own the rights to that image or that you have permission, or that the image carries a free license. Make the filename of the image the name of your story and include a backlink to the source in the body text at the bottom of your story.

Also include:

In the body text:

  • Title
  • Author name
  • Award name

(Optional) Intro – 150 characters
